Feng Shui for February!

By Sugeet

Eugene to Ashland, more snow than we’ve seen in years and years.  Grey days, depressed spirits.  Yuck.  Colds flu.  More yuck.

          (trumpets are heard)

Feng Shui to the rescue!!!!

Yes, simple things from Feng Shui can lift the winter doldrums and keep your spirits high.  All of them rise from Feng Shui’s intention of making our spaces more nourishing and harmonious.

It’s odd to realize that at the very time when our bodies (and those of most animals) are ready to pull in, be quiet and reflect, our culture does the holiday party circuit, the Super Bowl Circuit and the party party circuit.  What does Feng Shui offer as antidotes?

1)     Give yourself half a day on every weekend to do nothing.  Or at least nothing useful.  Pick up a good book and settle in on the couch with the cat and a blanket.  Sleep at odd times.  Don’t answer the phone.  And don’t watch a movie or television.  Listen to your body and give it time to recharge.  Purposefully put the brakes on, shift into neutral, and see how it feels to just be.  For many of us, this will not be easy, but it’s what we need to do if we want to tune in to the way nature works.

2)     Buy fresh flowers every week.  Put them in a nice vase and set them where you and everyone will see them daily.  Fresh flowers have a way to energizing chi and lifting the spirits.  While it can be cold and rainy or snowy outside, fresh flowers remind us of the new life that’s coming.

3)     Make comfort food like hearty soups and big breads.  There’s something warm and wonderful about these things, especially when you call he neighbors at the last moment and have a spontaneous dinner party.  Winter is the perfect time to draw in – draw in friends and loved ones – spend time just talking.

4)     Understand that Nature and chi work together and follow very natural rhythms.  Feng Shui tries to restore our physical places to those natural places.  Winter is a wonderful time to relax into a more natural way of being.  Our culture doesn’t support it and deteriorating health and unhealthy relationships are the result.

5)     Spend quality time with people you value.  It’s a marvelous time to deepen relationships.  Just as the right food is a comfort to the body, good friends are comfort for the soul.

6)     Find what colors make you feel up.  What colors make you feel quiet.  What colors make you feel warm. . . or cool and make notes about what you find.  An unhurried exploration during winter can often spark your creativity come spring.  You’ll be amazed at how right you were.  But now is the time to study those things, in quiet, reflective spaces.

So take hear, use the aspects of Winter that will help you grow into a more nourishing, wonderful person.  Not a bad way to start off 2008!
